Chanute sketches the conditions that seem necessary for the success of a heavier-than-air flying machine, i.e. an airplane. In general these are a light motor and a design which will maintain equilibrium in flight. He includes some figures for the desirable proportions of the components of an airplane.

This article looks like a very succinct indicator of the state of proto-aviation at the end of the 19th century; it is surprising that we don't know about a similar publication by Chanute in America or England. It would be worthwhile to compare the presentation here with Chanute's better-known [[Chanute, 1894, Progress in Flying Machines|Progress in Flying Machines]] (1894) and [[Chanute, 1893, Opening address. Conference on aerial navigation|presentation]] at the [[Aeronautical Navigation Conference at 1893 World's Fair|Columbian Exposition]] in 1893.
