Thomas Etholen Selfridge was an early airplane designer and pilot in the AEA. He died in 1908 in a demonstration flight piloted by Orville Wright.[1]

Selfridge is said to have studied heavier-than-air flight in Washington libraries (while a Field Artillery officer?), and contacted Bell in 1907. The meeting evidently went well and Bell petitioned President Theodore Roosevelt for Selfridge's assistance. Selfridge was therefore sent by the U.S. Army to Baddeck on 3 August 1907.[2]
