"Cybernetics" (cybernétique, Kybernetic, from Greek κυβερνητικός meaning navigation/governance) refers to systems designed with feedback loops for self-regulation; for example to maintain balance or a constant direction.
The term itself was not in widespread use before the middle twentieth century, but is used here as a retrospective classification for self-adjusting navigational systems.
