Fig. 1 in Lanchester, 1916, Aircraft in Warfare (p.8) illustrates the linear increase with speed of air resistance for airplanes, compared to exponential increase in dirigibles. Lanchester and others anticipated the implications of this law for the future of aviation.

Aerodynamics is the study of movement through air, with an eye towards aircraft efficiency. George Cayley was a forefather of the field. Along with improvements in propulsion, the study of aerodynamics improved the efficiency of flight and ultimately enabled the development of the heavier-than-air airplane.
