Balloons were used for bombing beginning on 15 May 1849 during the siege of Venice, when Venice rebelled against Austrian rule. Franz von Uchatius and field marshall Radetzky are named as responsible officers.[1]
It's not clear how many bombs were dropped. They are said to have been ineffective in breaking the siege.[2]
