Hiram Maxim, the famous inventor, in 1897 patented a device with components similar to those in the Sperry stabilizer of 1913. Maxim described a single gyro, a servomotor, and a follow-up system (English patent 19,228). Herbert Thompson, who later examined the patent, decided the device could not work because Maxim "did not know how to build gyros." (H. H. Thompson to EAS, London office, March 24, 1916; SP.)[1]
