While the unusual term Tragschirm is suggestive of a parachute (Fallschirm), the intended meaning might be closer to 'supporting umbrella-shaped surface'. The overall aircraft could be considered a hybrid on several levels. The author specifies that propulsion comes both from a screw propeller and from the wings—seemingly from flapping, maybe also from lift. The Tragschirmen are different planes, mounted higher than the moving wings (Flügeln).
