Illustration of an early flying boat for Patent US-1913-1170965 by Glenn Curtiss.

The flying boat is a type of hydroaeroplane which floats directly on the fuselage.

Tentatively: the flying boat contrasts with other airplanes which can land on water, which might be called float planes, in that it looks more like a boat and might be capable of longer nautical voyages. The flying boat is less an airplane with skid-floats, and more a boat with wings.
