Compartments

Larger balloons are sometimes envisioned, for various reasons, with separated gas compartments.

Creating multiple balloons is a safety feature because it creates redundancy in case one part of the balloon surface is punctured. Changing the balance of gas between compartments is a method of steering. Compartments can also structurally reinforce the larger balloon.

There is some overlap between compartments and ballonets. The latter are more commonly defined as smaller gas bags within the larger balloon, rather than sections of the whole. In some cases (Patent FR-1910-424413, Patent GB-1913-22124) "ballonets" with gas or air are envisioned as the dividing walls between compartments.

Patent FR-1911-429313 seems to be an exceedingly rare instance of an heavier-than-air flying machine which makes use of compartments, in a different manner.
