William Alexander Glassford was a Signal Corps officer involved in ballooning from the 1880s. When he retired in 1918 he was head of the aviation station at North Island, San Diego.[1]

One of his areas of interest was signaling through heliography. The Library of Congress has a map he prepared (June, 1900) of Puerto Rico showing "lines of signal communication, telegraph, telephone, and heliograph, operated by the Signals Corps, U.S. Army, with military posts".[2]
