The Wiener Flugtechnischer Verein or Vienna Flight Technology Association was founded 18 Aug. 1887 as an offshoot of the Oesterreichischer Ingenieur-Verein. (The original name was Flugtechnischer Verein in Wien.) It contributed towards publication of the Zeitschrift fur Luftschifffahrt up to 1901 when it adopted as its official journal the Illustrierte Aëronautische Mitteilungen; the latter was supported by both the Deutscher Luftschiffer Verband and the Wiener Flugtechnischer Vereins. It was not associated with the magazine after 1908. On 3 Feb. 1909, the Österreichischer Flugtechnischer Verein or Austrian Flight Technology Association was created by the merger of the Wiener Flugtechnischer Verein and the Verein Flugmaschine (Flying Machine Association) of Vienna.

In early 1898, the association was placed under the patronage of Prince Ferdinand Carlo. The Verein contributed towards the cost of Wilhelm Kress's flying machine. Membership in 1906 was about 90 and it had a library of some 100 volumes.
