U.S. patent classification subclass 244/34 is for patents related to means of "aircraft sustention" -- means to provide support, relative to the air, for an aircraft to which it is attached.[1]

  • 244/9, 19, 22, 27, and 70, for paddle wheels which may sustain as well as propel.
  • 244/11, 22, 28, and 72, for beating wings which may sustain as well as propel.

Subclass USPC 244/35 "contains airfoils in which the novelty is in the shape of the individual airfoil, either in cross-section or in plan view."

  • USPC 244/34 Aircraft sustentation: Subject matter comprising means to provide support, relative to the air, for an aircraft to which it is attached.
    • USPC 244/35 Sustaining airfoils: Support providing means comprising an element, of the type commonly called a wing, plane, or blade, having a surface designed to be acted upon by a relatively moving stream of air to support the aircraft, a leading edge upstream and a trailing edge downstream, a theoretical chord line connecting the two edges, an upper surface when viewed planwise from above the chord line, and a lower surface when viewed planwise from below the chord line.
      • USPC 244/36 Lifting fuselages: Airplane fuselages having a shape which permits them to act as sustaining airfoils.
      • USPC 244/37 Lifting struts: Bracing struts on aircraft constructed and arranged to act as sustaining airfoils.
      • USPC 244/38 Resiliently mounted: Sustaining airfoils attached to aircraft by such devices as springs, elastic cables, etc.
      • USPC 244/39 Rotatable: Sustaining airfoils rotatable or capable of being moved in a rotary path with respect to the aircraft.
      • USPC 244/45 Arrangement: Subject matter having the relative arrangements between a plurality of sustaining airfoils or between one or more airfoils and the body or fuselage.
        • USPC 244/46 Variable: Arrangements of sustaining airfoils having provision for altering the arrangement at will or in response to changing conditions.
          • USPC 244/47 Dihedral: Sustaining airfoils so arranged that the dihedral angle of the wing surfaces on opposite sides of the aircraft may be altered at will or in response to changing conditions.
          • USPC 244/48 Incidence: Sustaining airfoils so arranged that the angle between their chord line and the line of thrust of the aircraft may be altered at will, or in response to changing conditions.
          • USPC 244/49 Folding: Sustaining airfoils arranged so that they may be folded to require less space in storage of the aircraft, or for similar purposes.
