Tissandier family

Albert-Charles Tissandier and Gaston Tissandier were brothers. Paul Tissandier was the son of Gaston, and the nephew of Albert-Charles. All seem to have been aeronautical and aviation innovators and leaders.

The brothers together made a celebrated but unsuccessful effort to reach Paris by balloon during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870.

In 1881 Gaston Tissandier registered the patent Patent FR-1881-143296, and additions, describing an electric motor for aerial locomotion. On 8 October 1883 and 1 December 1884 the Tissandiers became the first aeronauts to fly using electric propulsion. Their experiences are discussed in Les Ballons Dirigeables: Application de l'Électricité a la Navigation Aérienne, published 1885.

Albert-Charles Tissandier was on the organizing committee of the International Aeronautical Congress of 1889, was of the same family. Regarding patents registered, per se, it is likely that more will be on hand as more online and offline data is gathered.

It seems that a certain Thierry Tissandier, the son of Paul, wrote the preface to Les débuts de l'aviation à Pau 1900-1920, by Louis-Henri Sallenave. This work concerns crucial developments in aero-aviation occurring in Pau, département (modern) Pyrénées-Atlantiques, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine région of southwestern France. (This locale is of note in that it was key to numerous French developments, and it was also at Pau that Wilbur Wright founded the first aviation school in the world.)

Tissandier Papers

The Library of Congress has a "Tissandier Collection". This 1985 book seems to say they have 6000 items including correspondence. This might be the correct link for that.
