Société Zodiac
Zodiac Aviation was founded in 1896 by Maurice Mallet, Antonino Mélandri, and Vicomte Paul Simard de Pitray. Its first name was Mallet, Mélandri et de Pitray. In 1909 its name changed to Société française de ballons dirigeables et d’aviation Zodiac and in 1911, merging with Mallet workshops, its name became Société Zodiac. [1]
Patent BE-1914-267570 gives us “Société Zodiac (Anciens Établissements Aéronautiques M. Mallet)” and the address route du Hâvre, 15, Puteaux.[2]
Starts to make Voisin type planes in 1909, designs its own 2-seater in 1912.[3]
Licensed design to fledgling British and Colonial Aeroplane Co. in 1910, only to see this model fail completely when tested by Maurice Edmond. Britih & Colonial sued Zodiac and got a settlement out of court.[4]
