In 1885 commissioned Gabriel Yon of Paris to set up a complete aerostation system, including a winch apparatus, hydrogen generator, a "voiture d'agrés" (riggingly/supply car?), and a silk balloon with volume 536 m3.[1]

After a law of 23 May 1887, the Italian 3rd Engineering Regiment included a company of aerostatiers.[1]

By 1887 had adopted English methods including the use of goldbeater's skin and gas cylinders.[2] In November, procured two smaller English balloons built by Nordenfelt.[1]

On 4 December 1887 the aerostatiers shipped out to Abyssinia, where they established a hydrogen production station within the Italian base. Another production facility continued to operate at Naples.[1]

By 1900 Italy also used German kite-balloons in its Navy.[2]
