The Servicio de Aerostación Militar , based in Guadalajara, was created by decree on 17 August (or 30 September?)[1] 1896; and commanded from inception through 1910s by Colonel Pere Vives Vich, an engineer by training.[2]

In 1911, had at least three vessels: the España, the Principe de Asturias (captive dirigible), and the Urano (spherical balloon).[3]

In 1913, a new branch, the Servicio de Aeronáutica Militar, was created for airplanes, and Vives Vich was named its director.[2]

A separate service, the Aviación Naval was created as part of the Navy in 1917 (and renamed Aeronáutica Naval after 1920).[4]
