Robert Morrison Neilson was the author of a 1910 book of British patents related to aeronautics and aviation, a book which is used as a source on this site to identify particularly relevant patents.[1] In various works Neilson gave addresses in Manchester and at Atlantic Chambers, 45 Hope Street, Glasgow.

Neilson is described on an early page of that 1910 book as a Whitworth Exhibition exhibitioner, a member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, a member of the Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders in Scotland, a Consulting Engineer, and as a (British) Chartered Patent Agent.

Neilson was also the author of a book about steam turbines, first published in 1902 then subsequent editions were published in 1903, 1904, and 1912.[2][3]

Neilson also published a Handbook on patents for Scottish solicitors in 1914.[4] The text is clear and informative. It focuses almost entirely on United Kingdom patents, with just a couple of pages about international ones. There is some discussion of the patent examiner's role and the possibility of early opposition to the grant of a patent, which apparently could have an immediate effect within two months of acceptance. Pages 32-33 say that a patent was usually granted on the order of eleven weeks after the acceptance of the complete specification, unless there was opposition. Renewal fees were due after the fourth year of the patent term.[5]
