Steering apparatus for airplane using a wheel connected to a pulley which moves a rudder when turned; and a handle which causes the wings to move in a "screwlike" way. This includes a distortion of the wing's form which it is probably fair to classify as wing warping.

An important feature of the invention is the twisting of the side wings of the machine to approximate somewhat to the form of a screw, or so to distort the wings or the outer portion of the wings on each side in opposite senses as to produce a [section?] of a screw which as it is propelled through the air will tend to cause the machine to rotate on its axis of flight as it is propelled forward, in a right or left hand sense according to whether the screw formed is a right or left hand one. (2

During horizontal flight an aeroplane may meet with variation in the direction of movement of the atmosphere of a local character calling for some rapid re-adjustment to enable the machine to maintain itself in the horizontal or other plane of flight. The distortion of the wing of the aeroplane into the screw form during the flight will, by canting the aeroplane to any desired angle, counteract any such local movement of the atmosphere and the consequent overturning effect, and enable the aeroplane to retain its equilibrium notwithstanding any up or down draughts in the atmosphere that may be encountered during the flight. It also enables the operatior during a turning movement to cant the machine into the best position for making the turning curve with a minimum of side slip through the air during the turning movement.
