Patent GB-1911-5162
This filing expands on Dring's earlier Patent GB-1909-12556 for an insect-inspired helicopter-like aircraft with "vortex lifters".
The result of my further investigations and experiments shows that the greatest efficiency in this type of lifter is obtained by arranging the blades or vanes to that the surfaces of of all them lie approximately radial to the medial line of the shaft on which they are mounted so that their surfaces are all, and at all times, approximately at right angles to their path of movement. I also find that the efficiency of blades or vanes of any given size is materially increased by inclining them in the direction of their path of rotation so that their free ends are in advance of their root ends; in other words, increased efficiency is obtained without increasing the size or weight of the blades or vanes by inclining them in this manner.
According to my invention it is essential that the inner edges of the blades or vanes are so shaped and said blades or vanes are so arranged that the path taken by said inner edges is that of a cone and preferably that of an inwardly curved cone, and that the outer edges of the blades or vanes are so shaped that the path taken by said edges is that of an approximately straight sided cone.
