"Bell-shaped" propellers:
The propulsive effect of the bells is due to the fact that while moving, mouth forwards, in the direction opposed to the direction of travel (horizontal or vertical) the bells compress a considerable body of air, which exerts a motive thrust, whereas when moving in the opposite direction the compression of air is slight, and does not neutralize the thrust previously imparted.
