"17,036. Marshall, J. July 18. Propelling. -Aerial machines are raised, by one or more sets of upper and lower flapping wings operated through lazy-tongs. Two sets are shown in Fig. 2, one set being raised and the other set lowered. Each set comprises upper wings A and lower wings E pivoted about an axis C and connected by rods B<1> with the wings A. The wings A are connected by sliding collars K to masts J, and the wings E are connected by sliding collars K<1> to masts J<1>. The lazy-tongs of the wings A are operated by toggle levers L<1> pivoted to slides L on the axis C, the slides being reciprocated by cords M, M<1> from the motor P. Guides G are provided to carry the pivots of the lazy-tongs, which are acted upon by the toggles L<1>. The wings may be inclined on the up-stroke and horizontal on the down-stroke by having the trailing edge flexible, or they may be inclined on the down-stroke and vertical on the up-stroke. Screw propellers may be used for effecting horizontal propulsion. By placing a plane normal to the direction of flight, a direct lift at starting may be obtained."
