From the abstract on google patents: "The machine is raised by a series of reciprocating valved planes extending the length of the machine and comprises outer planes ... and central planes ... carried by vertical rods ... which are reciprocated in guides l in relatively opposite directions by cranks m. The downward movement of the planes is assisted, and their action steadied, by springs ... attached to the lower planes. Propellers [are] mounted on [an] upper shaft and a pair of shafts arranged at the lower corners of the machine."
