Surcouf writes that dirigible balloons have critical speed which exceeds their coefficient de sécurité, a speed less than the maximum speed allowed by their motors. (Possibly this has to do with the structural integrity of the balloon; distortions of shape caused by high speed?) The fusiform shape helps with lateral stability; in addition Surcouf describes a tail which performs the same function as the fletching of an arrow.

Specifically this tail comprises four conical ballonets, parallel to the longitudinal axis of the vessel, with gas communicating with the main balloon.

The use of ballonets avoids the problem of creating weak points in the structure of the primary balloon.
