Patent BE-1899-148401
« Ces ailes parallèles sont composées d’ailerons qui, s’accrochant les uns aux autres, au moment où l’aile presse sur l’air, se décrochent aussitôt que cette pression cesse et n’opposent à l’air qu’une très faible résistance durant leur retour au point de prise d’air. »
“These parallel wings are composed of ailerons which, clinging to each other, at the moment when the wing presses on the air, unhook as soon as this pressure ceases and oppose to the air only a very low resistance during their return to the point of air intake.”
This patent was titled, and described, fairly early, in terms of the norms of aero-terminology. A “propulseur”, was something which propelled, “propulseur à hélice” usually designating what we now call a “propeller”. The norm in France, gradually, reduced this to “propulseur”, while the francophone Belgian normal usage was reduced to “hélice”. Oddly, this now seems to have become the international francophone standard, well after the period on which we are focused.
This is not a “propulseur à hélice”, but a “propulseur aérien à ailes”. In an evolution much like that above, “aile”(wing), though sometimes, perhaps later, used interchangeably with “hélice”(blade)
This inventor is rather likely the author of Barnet, 1907, Principes de l'orthoptère à ailes parallèles, in which we may have an odd case in which an inventor was in no rush to file a patent, filing well after articulating and publicizing his ideas, and seemingly filing in only one country. Multi-national filing might not have been theoretically crucial, due to the provisions of the Convention de Paris pour la protection de la propriété industrielle. This single-nation filing is still quite rare.
This patent applies to the flapping wings, in particular, of the overall orthopter featured in the publication.
