Orville Wright to Glenn L. Martin 19-May-1917
Orville replies to a letter from Martin "asking for some particulars of the Dayton-Wright Airplane Company." (Dayton Wright Airplane Company)
The company was organized by Messrs. Deeds and Kettering and H. E. Talbott, Senior and Junior. These men are extraordinary good businessmen with lots of financial backing. They are going to try to carry out some of my ideas in creating a sport in aeronautics. Since the war has started, they are considering undertaking the building of a number of school planes for the government.
(I think people mentioned are Edward Andrew Deeds; Charles F. Kettering, Harold Elstner Talbott, Sr., and Harold Elstner Talbott, Jr..)
Gov't has leased 2,500 acres surrounding Wright field as a training facility for four squadrons.
Orville regrets the financial troubles of the Glenn L. Martin Company, commenting "I think I could have saved them some of this loss, but all new people taking hold of the business are inclined to think that they know a good deal more about it than those who have experience."
