The Official Gazette of the United States Patent Office (1872-1971) gives entries for each patent, including typically the list of claims and one illustration, along with name, inventor, date, and serial number. It would seem that this publication started including classifications for each invention around 1912, the same time that USPC 244 came into existence. We don't yet know how aero inventions from before this time were classified–though, presumably, classified they were, since a classification system did exist.
