The Oberrheinischer Verein für Luftschiffahrt or Upper Rhine Association for Aerial Navigation was founded in Stassburg, Germany, on 24 July 1896. It owned balloon stores and had arranged numerous ascents since 1897. It published the Illustrierte Mitteilungen des Oberrheinischen Vereins fur Luftschiffahrt from 1897 to 1898 when the journal was reorganised as the Illustrierte Aëronautische Mitteilungen the first volume of which was numbered Vol. 2; Vols 2-4 were co-published by the Oberrheinischer Verein für Lutfschiffahrt and the Münchener Verein für Luftschiffahrt. It was one of the original founding members of the DLV (German Aeronaut Federation : Deutscher Luftschiffer-Verband), on 28 Dec. 1902.

There were 182 members at the association's founding in 1896. Membership in April 1906 was 200, including 25 qualified aeronauts. In 1906, the library contained about 70 volumes. The association's patron was the Prince of Hohenloe-Langenburg, the governor of Alsace-Lorraine. In 1910, Professor Dr. Hergesell was president and A. Rossler was office director. At that time, there were 515 members, of whom 40 were balloon guides. The association owned three free balloons and used the Stadtisches Gaswerk (Municipal Gasworks) at Strassburg, as its balloon place.

For further information on the Oberrheinischer Verein fur Luttschiffahrt, see citations in Brockett (1921). The journal begun by the Oberrheinischer Verein changed names a number of times, eventually becoming Deutsche Luftfahrt, the name under which it is cataloged and available at Hathitrust.org.
