Nervure
The nervure is an element within an airplane wing which gives or supports the wing's shape.
The term is biological in origin and has different meanings in different fields; regarding nervure in the realm of construction, Trésor de la langue française gives the following:[1]
Élément de l'armature donnant de la tenue ou une forme particulière à un matériau souple ou malléable. [La] membrure [d'un plan d'avion en forme de] (...) poutre sert de support à des éléments profilés appelés «nervures» et destinés à donner à l'aile un profil convenable (Guillemin, Constr., calcul et essais avions,1929, p.98).Des profilés creux, en acier, soudés sur cette membrure de traction, supportent les nervures (...). Les nervures méridiennes sont comme les nervures circonférentielles, constituées par des planches encollées (Joedicke, Structures en voiles et coques,1962, pp.123-124). − En partic. Poutre de renforcement en acier ou en béton armé, d'un plancher, d'un mur, d'une voûte. Plancher à nervure transversale; nervure de raidissement. La rive du toit en coque de l'aéroport de St-Louis (USA) est renforcée par une nervure massive en béton armé (Siegel, Formes struct. archit. mod.,1965, p.228).
James White, in Practical Aviation[2] translates nervure as "wing rib", i.e. "A fore and aft member of the wing structure used to support the covering and to give the wing section its form."
