The Meteorological Department of the Board of Trade of the United Kingdom, later known as the Met[eorological] Office, was the first national meteorological service of the modern era. It was founded in 1854 with Robert Fitzroy its first head.[1]

In 1860 it received weather reports by telegraph from 15 stations around the UK. In 1861 it began publishing public weather forecasts. Their quality was so poor they underwent a 13-year moratorium beginning in 1866.[1]

Robert Henry Scott was director of the office from 1867, when it became independent of the Board of Trade, to 1900.[2]
