Louis Gathmann was a well-known inventor who moved from Germany to Chicago to Washington, DC.[1] He had aero patents and gun patents.

His children knew of his work and participated at least a bit. He licensed US871926 to Emil Gathmann of Bethlehem PA, and the witnesses on the patent were Paul and Olga Gathmann. In DC in 1904 he was listed as an engineer with an address 1839 Vernon Av, NW. At the same address was Otto Gathmann, a "clk" (clerk I assume).[2] All of these appear to have been his children, according to the Wikipedia entry.

This source says he had a british patent filed in 1904 with the eventual number 18560 (perhaps next to the one granted in 1907) for an improvement in aerial propellers.[3]

In a 1907 patent he describes himself as a "consulting engineer", with the address 2017 Kalorama NW, Washington DC.
