Leonardo Torres Quevedo (1852–1936) was a Spanish inventor, engineer, and mathematician. Along with notable work on electronics, computing, and mathematics, he made important contributions to airship design dealing with the structure of balloons. We have him addressed at No. 3, Valgamo Dios, Madrid, Spain.[1]

In 1902 Torres Quevedo submitted a patent in France titled "perfectionnements aux aérostats dirigibles", with a "Note sur le calcul d'un ballon dirigeable a quille et suspentes intérieures". This represented a 'third type' of airship, neither the rigid Zeppelin type nor the non-rigid Santos-Dumont type. Torres Quevedo's design called for three lobes, with support created by an interior suspension system.[2]

Société de Constructions Aéronautiques (Astra) bought Torres Quevedo's dirigible patents outside of Sapin and began constructing Astra Torres dirigibles in 1910.[3]

In 1916, Torres Quevedo and his son Gonzalo realized at Niagra Falls an aerial tramway of the type he patented in 1887.[3]

On an archival research note, certain patents have been found via “Torrès (L.)”, as indexed within RdBdI Tome 62, 1914, January-August.[4]
