Julius Schülke was an engineer located at 18 Kaiserin-Augusta Strasse, Jena.

His principal invention involved flapping wings attached to disks which would rotate, kind of an ornithopter-helicopter hybrid. It would be interesting to see his actual construction, or a reconstruction of it.

Research at DPMA and google (searching for versions of the name SCHUELKE JULIUS) shows that he had many patents, mainly related to acetylene gas flows I think, four of which had to do with aero. There does not seem to be a German national ancestor patent of the aero group, and three were filed the same day, 1907-05-10. The French office approves first, so let's arbitrarily treat that one as the principal patent. The others are straightforwardly child patents. He has rewritten it more simply for the US application after filing the British application.

Also it seems to be a helpful example of how patent offices treat a somewhat intricate obscure patent application like this. The French office approves it in about three months. The British office takes one year. The US office takes three years. The Austrian office takes 5 years. The German office presumably received his application but never approved.

And this invention is generally classified as an ornithopter, but an evaluator of the US patent classified it as an oscillating fan. Hmm!
