James Grieve Lorrain

James Grieve Lorrain, M.I.Mech.E., M.I.E.E., was an electrical engineer and chartered patent agent. One of his patents for automatically responsive electronic systems included the use case of a balloon whose altitude could be regulated by a system which responded to changes in pressure by heating or cooling the balloon's air. As a patent agent his recorded address was Norfolk House, Norfolk Street, London, W.C.[1].

Lorrain studied at Edinburgh University, University College London, the Royal School of Mines, and the College of France; then worked for the Scottish Telephonic Exchange. He founded the Anglo-Indian Telephone Company in 1880. He began working as patent agent, as well as consulting engineer, in 1886.[2][3]
