“Főosztály V”

Within Hungarian patent classifications, “V" designates “Vasutak, erőgépek” (that is, railways and machinery). “Főosztály V” is the “főosztály” into which “Osztály V/h” falls. “Főosztály” may translate as “Department”, or “Category”, and “Osztály” may translate as “Class”, though “Főosztály” and “Osztály” could be seen as respectively analogous to the “Class” and “Group” variants we find elsewhere. The translated semantics are getting tight, and in the case of Hungarian material we have nothing approaching recognizable cognates. We find elsewhere that analogous relations, whether in theory or as applied, are imperfect. It is within “Osztály V/h” (our HU V/h) that we find all Hungarian aero patent material. This is verifiably the case, via the Szellemi Tulajdon Nemzeti Hivatala search engine, from sometime before 1896, at which time we begin finding Hungarian data which has been uploaded, up through some point beyond our years covered. With access to volumes of the Szabadalmi Kőzlőny we may or may not find that this system of classification dates to the beginning of said published catalogues. That our HU V/h falls within the clearly non-marine “Főosztály V” is a point of differentiation relative to aero-patent classification as we've seen it evolve elsewhere.
