Gustave Hermite was a French aero inventor, whom L'Aérophile eulogized as a founder of modern scientific aerostation.[1]

The nephew of a famous mathematician, Hermite received a rigorous scientific education, with higher studies in astronomy. In 1887 he developed a télèmétre instrument for quickly determining the distance of an object. He began working on aeronautics in 1888, envisioning a small electric-powered helicopter.[1]

With Georges Besançon he developed the first ballon-sonde in 1892, thus providing an important new tool for the blossoming science of meteorology. he made many ascensions himself, with Besançon, and with Maurice Farman.[1]
