Faust Vrančić aka Fausto Veranzio was a "Croatian inventor, diplomat, engineer and linguist" who published a design for a functional parachute in 1615.[1] His book was called Machinae Novae (New Machines). For more, see w:Fausto Veranzio.[2]

If you visit the ”Faust Vrančić” Memorial Centre on the quaint little island of Prvić, where he spent his summers as a boy, you can see some of his other inventions, such as the suspension bridge that would not come into use until a few hundred years later.[1]
