Dienstbach, 1907, The second Gordon-Bennett race
Some generally enthusiastic reportage from the St. Louis balloon race. Germany took first and third place for distance. Dienstbach remarks (diplomatically):
The thought then arises—what are the points, if any, in the German balloons, which made possible such performances. It may or may not be admitted that the reasons are contained in the following description of a German balloon. These balloons are the result of extensive experience as to the requirements of a balloon for "rough and ready" club practice in Germany. They might be called the ideal sporting balloons. They possess a wonderful endurance, differing from all others in solidity of construction. A German balloon is said to be good for 100 trips; a French balloon for 30, however accurate that may be.
He goes on to explain that the fabric of the German balloons is much stronger, composed of two layers of canvas with threads running at angles and a layer of rubber in between. Rubber solution is also used to repair punctures in the envelope.
