Charles Matthews Manly was a recent graduate of Cornell University when he was hired by Samuel Langley to be his main assistant in constructing his aerodrome (airplane). That led to a stressful and dramatic period trying to get the aerodrome to fly in increasingly public experiments, with Manly as pilot. It was Manly's first job. He survived, and went on to be a respected engineer in New York City.[1]
Glenshaw's 2020 presentation describes Manly and his role extensively.
Manly coordinated with Stephen Balzer to get an advanced engine together, which had over 50hp while small and light enough to attach to the craft. A major accomplishment of Manly's was to modify Balzer's design or his engine.[2][3]
