Chanute observers that the field of aerial navigation is at a turning point, as "navigable balloons have recently been developed to what is believed to be nearly the limit of their efficiency, and after three intelligent but unfortunate attempts by others, a successful dynamic flying machine seems to have been produced by the Messrs. Wright."
He gives a brief history of progress in aeroanutics and aviation. Turning his focus to the newly introduced airplane, he suggests it will take time to make it safer and for people to learn how to pilot it. He also predicts that its first major application will be military.
