Carène

This comes up in our data,[1][2][3][4][5] in association with the English keel.

Carène may be defined as the "ensemble des œuvres vives d’un navire, quille et flancs, jusqu’à fleur d’eau"[6] (that is, "set of lively (or structurally crucial) works of a ship, keel and flanks, up to the water's bloom"). That is, the "quille" is part of the carène "ensemble".

Within more general francophone usage, Carène treated as fundamentally designating quille[7], and "quille" is defined as the lowermost part of a boat[8].

(Within the context of inter-linguistic Wikipedia usage and so forth, quille is the more ordinary French equivalent of the English keel.)
