Bertrand-Marie de Lesseps (3 February 1875 – 28 August 1918) was an aero inventor and a fencer, competing for France in the individual and team sabre events at the 1908 Summer Olympics, the brother of Ismaël de Lesseps, and son of Ferdinand de Lesseps, killed in action during World War I.[1]

We have him as a Count de Lesseps, and yes, competing in sabre at the 1908 Olympics, alongside his brother, Ismaël de Lesseps, with another brother, Mathieu de Lesseps, having competed in equestrian events at the 1900 Olympics, three of 17 children born to Ferdinand de Lesseps by two different wives, Ferdinand de Lesseps being a French diplomat who later helped plan and develop the Suez Canal. These three are noted as French pioneers of aviation, with Bertrand earning his flying certificate in 1910. Jacques de Lesseps is another brother, not an Olympian, serving in the 2nd Bombing Group of the French Service as a captain and pilot, receiving the American Distinguished Service Cross for bravery in August 1918.[2]

Bertrand de Lesseps joined the 20e Battalion de Chasseurs, rising to the rank of captain. He was killed in action while leading his men on a reconnoitering mission near Chauvigny, France on 28 August 1918.

He has entered our patent data as being located within département Seine, France, and sometimes filing in collaboration with Julien Champagne.[3]

Canadian patent data gives him, under the name Bertrand de Lesseps, as a Civil Engineer, addressed at 8, rue Georges Ville, Paris.[4] This patent has to do with air propulsion of a sleigh or hydro-plane (in the original sense), showing design elements which prevail in his outright aeronautical work. We may or may not want this patent. We will likely find more aeronautical material on him.

Marguerite de Lesseps of Patent GB-1919-128955 shares this address. This clinches the Canadian data relative to the British and French. Marguerite's British patents makes reference to Bertrand-Marie's Patent FR-1918-496760. She was his wife, and is documented as his widow.[5]
