Alexandre Arson was a civil engineer who worked for the Compagnie Parisienne du Gaz; from 1857–1894 he was "Ingénieur Chef du Service des Usines". He was a founding member of the Société des ingénieurs civils de France in 1848 and its vice-president in 1876–7.[1]

In the first part of his career Arson worked on fluid dynamics in pipes.[2] Later he developed an interest in aeronautics and on 17 July 1878 addressed the Société des ingénieurs civils on the subject of airship steering.[3]

He was vice president of the balloon section of the International Aeronautical Congress of 1889.[4][5] This Congress, with the Association française pour l'avancement des sciences, created the Commission permanente civile d'áeronautique, of which Arson was treasurer throughout the 1890s.[6]

In 1892 he was elected president of the Société française de navigation aérienne.[7]
