Alexandre Liwentaal was a Swiss inventor, of Estonian ancestry and sympathies, who studied in Paris during the 1880s.

In the 1890s he began work on heavier-than-air aircraft designs, in parallel to but unaware of similar work by Clément Ader.[1]

In 1911 patents he characterized himself as an "engineer". As of May 1911 he filed patents from 92 High Street, Islington, London, N., then as of December's complete spec filing, rue Louis-Ulbach, Courbevoie, France.

This painting characterizes Liwentaal's glider as an "aerostat", and calls it the Dittisham Flyer: https://artuk.org/discover/artworks/the-dittisham-flyer-liwentaals-aerostat-in-fields-94932 The painting's at Britain's Dartmouth museum, and has this note: "Alexandre Liwentaal (1868–1940), the Swiss designer/builder and pilot of this glider, worked as an engineer at Simpson, Strickland & Co. Ltd of Dartmouth, builders of marine engines."

Sources may differ on his birth date -- a previous version of this record says it was 1866-01-03 3PM. The 1868 date comes from wikidata.
