Aero Club of Texas
The Aero Club of Texas was organized July 1915 by businessmen of San Antonio and U.S. Army officers acting through the Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber was acting at the suggestion of Major General Frederick Funston, Commander of the Southern Department, U.S. Army. (It was unofficially announced as the policy of the Army to encourage civilian interest in aviation and to lend, wherever possible, practical assistance in the training of civilians.) Use was expected of the aviation field at Fort Sam Houston, just outside of San Antonio, which, in a few months, was to become the center of the Army.[1]
Not on list of ACA affiliates in Flying, July 1919, but is on list in Flying, Aug. 1919.[2]
Initial officers were: A. B. Weakley, president; Major General Frederick Funston, L. B. Clegg, and Gen. James Parker, vice presidents; Harold Kayton, secretary; and Richard Negley, treasurer.[1]
