Boris Nikitich Vorobiev

Boris Nikitich Vorobiev (or Vorob'ev or Vorobyov etc.) / Борис Никитич Воробьевъ (or Воробьёв) was an airplane engineer and the editor of Vestnik Vozdukhoplavaniya from 1909–1912. During World War I he designed aircraft engines for Duflon, Konstantinovich & Co.. He went on to a long and distinguished career in Soviet Moscow, in which one of his major roles was to promote the legacy of Konstantin Tziolkovski.[1]

Biography

Vorobiev was raised in St. Petersburg and received technical education from the Русское техническое общество (Russian Technical Society) in 1897. Later (1906–9, age 24–7) he was educated in Berlin and at Karlsruhe, where he attended the Polytechnical Institute.[2][1]

After returning to Russia he worked at First Russian Aeronautics Company Shchetinin & Co.[3] At the same time, he became editor of Vestnik Vozdukhoplavaniya. He went on to edit Technika Vozdukhoplavaniya[4] in 1912–3 and Motor[5] in 1913–4.[1]

In 1914 Vorobiev was appointed head of the technical division of an airplane repair plant, then in 1915 went to Duflon, Konstantinovich & Co. where he headed the motors and construction departments. From 1916–1920 he worked on engines in Alexandrovsk/Zaporzhia, Simferopol, Kherson, and Odessa. [6]

Vorobiev archive

The Archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow holds two collections from Vorobiev, one an archive of his personal works and letters, another his collection of aeronautics documents.[1]

The archives have a 1908 report by Vorobiev on Vozdukhoplavatel (1903-1916) from 1904–7 as well as lots of material (reviews, letters, etc.) related to his editorship of Vestnik Vozdukhoplavaniya.

There is another book, by Александр Владимирович Фирсов, titled Борис Никитич Воробьев - создатель первого авиационного мотора АО "Мотор Сич"[11] (Boris Nikitich Vorobiev, creator of the first aviation motor, AO Motor Sich.) Cf. w:ru:Мотор Сич in Zaporzhia.
